Since Mozilla lacks a way to invoke an external command when the biff status changes, I implemented a small XUL application which achieves exactly this.
The application adds a setting the the "Advanced preferences" tab which allows you enable or disable this feature and specify a command to invoke when the biff status changes.
In combination with the application panel kernel module I can now operate my notebook's "Mail" LED... YAY!
